Traccar Geocoder

April 12, 2026

We are excited to announce the release of Traccar Geocoder - our own reverse geocoding service designed to be as lightweight and performant as possible.

While Traccar has always supported third-party reverse geocoding providers like Google, LocationIQ, and Nominatim, we wanted to offer a solution that is specifically optimized for tracking use cases. Traccar Geocoder is built on top of OpenStreetMap data and is hyper-optimized for speed. It uses the Nominatim response format, making it a drop-in replacement for existing setups. The source code is fully open source and available on GitHub.

One of the key advantages of Traccar Geocoder is that it can be completely self-hosted. If you prefer to have full control over your infrastructure, you can deploy it on your own server. It can be deployed as a single Docker container, making it very easy to get up and running quickly. All the instructions for setting up your own instance are available in the GitHub repository.

For those who prefer a hassle-free experience, we also offer a hosted version of the geocoder with several subscription plans.

For configuration details, please refer to the reverse geocoding documentation.

We believe Traccar Geocoder provides the best balance of performance, cost, and flexibility for the Traccar community. Whether you choose to self-host or subscribe to our hosted service, you get a fast and reliable geocoding solution.
