Establish if the Z8 is responding first by sending an SMS to your Z8 tracker (only works on a 2G network (network sim must support 2G)):

I see the Z8, G8 and F9 us based on the same protocol are still being sold on ebay and AliExpress/Alibaba. i have all 3.
I have 2 x Z8's. they use 2 different servers, one is now defuct and the other server won't permit its IMEI to connect if you update the server setting.
even if you get connectivity, there is no server for it. they're only 2g network compatible, they work here in the UK on EE and o2, not Vodafone from my tests. three (3) doesn't have a 2g network.
if you have a compatible sim, it should reply if you send STATUS# as a text message to it.
it won't work in the US, Australia and many more countries, they've ended their 2g network.
did anyone ever locate the manufacturer and obtain the protocol documentation for these Z8, G8 and F8 trackers?
