Hello everyone,
I am a volunteer with the Maltese Aid Service organisation.
As we are currently setting up a rescue dog unit, I am currently looking into the technical requirements for such a search and rescue unit.
Our operations management software allows Traccar as an import interface, so I am now looking for the most reliable GPS trackers possible.
Requirements:
- Battery life of at least 24 hours
- Splash-proof and dust-proof
- Live tracking (queries every 5-10 seconds)
- High query accuracy (accuracy of less than 3 metres would be desirable)
- Lightweight
Are there any recommendations or experiences with trackers that best meet the above requirements?
Kind regards
Mictrack may be a good option for you. I have used it and it works.
You can also consider JimiIoT, though its primary focus isn’t pet tracking, so it may lack some features specific to that use case.
One of the biggest challenges you may face is accuracy, especially since rescues are often expected to be indoors. Most GPS trackers—particularly smaller pet trackers—struggle with indoor accuracy.
This reduced accuracy can also lead to false positive alerts if you use the geofence feature. This issue affects all pet trackers on the market, regardless of the features they claim to offer to eliminate it.
Thank you very much for your reply.
I will take a look at the QbitM and the tracker from Mictrack.
Just to clarify, as these are area search dogs, their primary area of application will be outdoors in forests, etc.
Later on, they may also be used in rubble search, but that would only be the second step.
Yes, outdoors these devices work as expected for most part.
However just one thing to remember is that both the devices operate on CAT-M1 network, so you may want to check availability of this network and also coverage in the forest.
Thanks for the tip.
I checked, but this network should be available in Germany.
Do the devices still need a SIM card?
