Tracking device recommendation for Railway Rollingstock

Matt5 years ago

Hello all!
We run a heritage railway service with both steam and diesel trains.
We have been using Traccar off phones, however want to make it more automated by having a device for each of our trains, that does not need crews to enter any data to activate tracking.
We do have power supply in the trains.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

It depends what sort of automation you are talking about.

I'm interested. Which heritage railway?

By automation I mean trackers that are wired in that don’t require crews to set.

Hi Matt,

Your railway is a bit of a long journey form here in North West England.

All of the trackers which I know about use the 2G mobile phone network which is still very much alive and well here in the UK. My understanding is that 2G network is no longer available in your part of the world. But to answer your question I would have recommended the Queclink GL300.

I have no experience of the newer Queclink GL300W, but they should work with a 4G LTE network.

You would only need to add the data once and that can be done with SMS. Does that still work in Victoria?

No worries John! Thanks again :)

I would permanently hard wire in a tracker. Jimi GV20 / GT06E work well for 3g service and are cheap. Hard wire it to your DC battery. You may want to look at one of the Jimi models with an external antenna for a permanent install.
