Which OBD II device for GPS tracking and fuel consumption?

nepha month ago

Hi,

I just discovered Traccar and I'm personally interested in using it to keep track of my trips and fuel consumption.

I searched this forum for compatible OBD II dongles, but I didn't really find answers to my questions.

I found the Teltonika FMB003, which is really small; it would be perfect, but it's only compatible with 2G, and in Europe it won't be available until the end of 2025 or 2026 (depending on the carrier). Are there other similarly small alternatives for 3G or 4G? How can I be sure the device will display fuel data? My vehicle seems compatible with the Teltonika FMx003; I should have the remaining fuel in % and in liters. But I'd like to be sure...

Thanks in advance for your answers,

neph.

I think the question is more about your vehicle and whether it reports this info.

@Anton Tananaev : You are right, I have a Peugeot 308 II (T9) from 2013. Normally this information is available via OBD2.

By the way: I have a Vgate iCar Pro ELM327 OBD2 dongle with Bluetooth 4.0. Is there no iOS app or API to send ODB2 data to a Traccar server? Because I will be the one and only driver of the vehicle, so there is no need to use a device with a SIM card, I always have my iPhone with me.

Thanks.

There's no Traccar app that can do it, but maybe there are some third party apps.

FMB003 equivalent for 4G LTE is model FMC003. You can try it.

@kri : Yes, it's true, I almost bought it but it will be less discreet than the 2G model. I bought the FMB003 second-hand but no information comes back on Traccar :/

The SIM card is "Ready" according to Teltonika Configurator on Windows 10, I removed my domain name (which was behind a Traefik proxy) and I just put my server IP and port 5027 which responds well. But I don't see anything in the Docker logs :/ How to debug? Thanks...

Traccar container doesnt log to console output (aka docker/podman logs traccar).

You can jump into running container via "podman exec -it traccar /bin/sh"
and then "less /opt/traccar/logs/tracker-server.log".

If you mapped /opt/traccar/logs/ directory out of container via Volume option,
you can look at this directory.

@kri Thanks, I looked carefully at the tracker-server.log file. Initially, there are many devices sending information while my dedicated server has only one device and I have not communicated the public IP... Like this:

I decided to open only port 5027 which interests me from this morning 10:38, I have nothing more in the logs... except the telnet which works which I have just carried out:

So, I don't understand... Does this mean that the tracker can't communicate with my Traccar server? The SIM card is ready, I reset all the settings (used purchase), I correctly entered the IP and port of my server. How can I test the connection to the server via the Teltonika Configurator software?

Thanks for your help...

The communication should be two-way

Cannt help with configuration of tracker itself. I did it several years ago and not remember.

@kri : ah ok, I see. It seems like my configuration is wrong for 2G ("GPRS status: deactivated") right? No data consumption, that's suspicious right?
