That's not great news for consumers, so hopefully people vote with their wallet against this practice.
I am strongly agree with @Anton, the best practice is to use domain name instead of IP address. @Track-trace, I didn't hear anything of EU regulation for using fixed IP, do you have some references to the law for this?
@khaksar i do not have references on this regulation about fixed ip. I found out that while testing some 4g gps watches / trackers that i could not change the server ip with sms commands. When i contacted the supplier/assembler they told me that it could only be changed through a firmware update. Then they provided a new firmware with the needed server ip. But i think they would only do that while having a good long term business relationship. Then it worked. I asked for the tools, which they could / would not provide. I also asked why this change was made. Previously you could always change the server ip with commands. They told me that it was done because of the above mentioned reason. I do not like it but there is some logic in it (security wise).
@Anton, I see, thats probably the reason then to have DNS caching (to avoid this delay). Anyway what i see now is that this Chinese manufacturer uses a new approach. They implement a fixed server ip and port for new devices in the firmware (at least all new 4G devices). And this server ip can only be changed through a new firmware update. So they protect their market (and bigger buyers), i also understand this is done because of EU regulations (because of security).
