You forgot to mention which report you're talking about.
As for date format, it is provided by your browser, so it's either your system or browser misconfiguration. Somewhere it must be set to the US locale.
Sorry - I generally use Trip report or Stop report.
Dead right on the browser - Just added English NZ langauge and set it as the Chrome display language and thats done it. I've never noticed that before always assuming Date formats would be set by the site visited.
And how many rows are there in the report? It is probably geocoding delay if you have per request geocoding enabled.
I just ran a Stop report for a week (I use Traccar to report on my customer visits) - The stop report is quicker and took around 10 seconds. It shows and address for all of them except the ones in a geofenced location so I'm picking I do have per request on. Is it likely to get a major speedup if I use a local install of Nominatim?? Worth running another PC in my garage 24/7 potentially although 10-20 seconds for each report I request isn't really a big wait.
You should try this:
https://github.com/traccar/traccar-geocoder
It's easy to host and it's lightning fast.
Hmmm - I think this is what I'd "planned" in my head from an earlier conversation. Them when I went to do it I remembered Nominatim.
Nominatim provides another use for me - Is the request format likely to be the same and does it do geocoding as well as reverse geocoding or is it very specific to Traccar? Just wondering if I can use it for both.
It talks about at least 16GB of ram for the whole world - Whats it like for a single (smallish) country? I could run it as a VM on my Microsoft server via HyperV if its smaller than Nominatim that is weirdly resource hungry.
Request and response are compatible with Nominatim, but it only does reverse geocoding.
It is massively more efficient at reverse geocoding that Nominatim. For a small country you probably need less than 1GB RAM. Probably a few hundred MB is enough. And the speed is 1000x Nominatim (literally, not exaggeration).
Wow - Nothing like good optimization! I'll set that up in a VM on my windows server then as 1-2GB will be no issue - Only a 16GB Server but its light use.
Then I can set the Nominatim server for running up to 50K requests from a CSV at the clients and then can provide the hardware and pay the power bill ;)
Thanks again Anton. Traccer-Geocoder all installed on Ubuntu server LTS in a HyperV VM. I've got dynamic Memory on and its using 1.5GB. Runs lightning quick now - A report for Trip in a custom period a week ago that has 36 entries in the result runs in a second. Takes 2 seconds to run it for the whole of last month with 141 records. Very slick.
I'll be making a donation as I was using a paid offline GPS logger that I uploaded monthly and got reports from. It was only $30NZD per year but they've shut it down completely and replaced it with a live tracker for $20 per month. With your amazing software (and help!) I'm tracking live with only the cost of the Trackers and a couple of 5 year IoT Sims. I've bought a second tracker for our caravan, part for theft tracking but mainly to log our trips away.
Considering the value I'm getting from the app, the Reverse Geocoder and your exceptional support its surpassing a paid commercial service.
Hey I tried paypal either with my account or with a card and it says "Donations to this recipient aren't supported in this country" ? Bit weird for New Zealand. I went to Paypal and searched for you and paid direct. Not sure if the "donation" feature is restricted or what but payment is going your way. Thanks again.
Thank you. It is weird that it says donations are not supported.
It'll be some weird New Zealand thing that Paypal don't aknowledge we exist.
One "issue" - My Traccar-geocoder docker isn't running automatically.
I "installed" it using
docker run -e PBF_URLS="https://download.geofabrik.de/australia-oceania/new-zealand-latest.osm.pbf" \
-v geocoder-data:/data -p 3000:3000 traccar/traccar-geocoder
Which got it downloaded, indexed and running like a dream. Issue is when I restart the Ubuntu server VM it doesn't run. I have to do a
docker run -v geocoder-data:/data -p 3000:3000 traccar/traccar-geocoder serve
For it to run again. Is this because of the way I built the docker with docker run rather than a compose file?
Sorry - My knowledge of Docker is low and Linux fairly low.
You need to configure restart policy on your docker. Something like this:
docker update --restart unless-stopped CONTAINER_ID
docker start CONTAINER_ID
My Traccar server is working very well. When I do a report for a week it takes about 20 seconds to populate the data. Am I right that most of that time is reverse geocoding to give addresses? If this is the case I have just build a decent Nominatim server thats currently sitting at my office for a QGIS map for geocoding a CSV of addresses into locations on a map. Its going to be an ongoing project updating a QGIS map with around 25,000 addresses from a project list to create a map of a clients project sites.
No reason I couldn't put the Nominatim server in my rack at home and use it for Traccar and either do the QGIS reports here or open a pinhole locked to a static IP source to allow access from over the web.
Is there anything else I'm missing performance wise to explain the delay? I assume its due to free online nominatim rate limits?
The server is a Xeon E3 with 32GB Ram running Ubuntu - Had a bit of a mare getting it setup as the good step by step guides I found first were 2-3 years out of date and things have changed/moved on a lot since. Bit of stuffing around with the basic instruction on the nominatim website and my very sporadic limited experience with Linux got me there.
EDIT: One other question - How do I set the date format to NZ?? Its using US date format MM/DD/YYYY even though everything I've found is set to NZ time zone, a GPS location thats in NZ and on a Windows server thats set to NZ Regional settings.
